Hypertension
BACKGROUND: After discovering several patients in the community with severely elevated blood pressures causing symptoms and complications including debilitating strokes, we researched the prevalence of hypertension (HTN) in the surrounding villages and found it was significantly underreported and undertreated.
Establishing a HTN Clinic
INTERVENTION: In 2014 we founded a Hypertension Clinic on site at the Bugoye Level III Health Center, embedded centrally to the mountainous communities we serve where travel and transportation are significant barriers to accessing care. This is the first program of its kind to be implemented in the region outside of a hospital or higher level health center.
IMPACT: We now have over 1,300 patients actively enrolled in the clinic, receiving daily medications, monitoring and management. We have demonstrated significant improvements in blood pressure control with our interventions and continue to enroll new patients weekly.
